Distrikt
This buzzing restaurant and club has earned itself a cult following on the Leeds dining and dancing scene. Tapping into a niche market, Distrikt feels like more of a basement bar than a restaurant, but therein lies its unique appeal. The menu is an esoteric mix of tapas and claypot dishes with Middle Eastern and Mediterranean influences – we recommend the smoked haddock with a duck egg, black cardamon, wild rice and crispy shallots followed by the Lebanese donuts drizzled with lemon syrup for dessert – and Distrikt is always crammed with a vibrant food-loving crowd who know how to have a good time. Suitable for dates, celebrations and private parties, Distrikt is perfect for fun nights out.

Harvey Nichols Fourth Floor Restaurant
Leeds-dwelling fashionistas worth their weight in Fendi baguettes know that the very best place in town for pre-Prada, post-Pringle cocktails is the Fourth Floor restaurant in Harvey Nichs. The city's champagne and salad set meet here regularly to discuss scandals of the socialite kind and gab about Gucci, and the gourmet menu is figure-friendly and fashionably free range. Perfect for chic business lunches and leisurely liaisons, Harvey Nichols Fourth Floor serves up favourites such as the smoked chicken, pecorino and grape salad served with walnut dressing; the grilled plaice with brown shrimp and cucumber beurre noisette; and the raspberry Eton mess for that special touch of boarding school nostalgia. Livebait
Livebait has got just the right stuff to lure hungry diners into its bright, friendly restaurant. The atmosphere is brasserie-ish in the sense that it's informal and relaxed, but with witty conversation bouncing off the white-tiled walls it's anything but subdued. This particular branch is arranged over two floors, and it has the same high-quality super-fresh fish and shellfish that makes the food so memorable in other locations. The most popular dish is the Livebait Platter, a huge international grouping of Nova Scotia lobster, Dorset crab, Madagascan crevettes, Atlantic prawns and Indian Ocean crevettes that serves at least two people. Starters range from steamed mussels to fish soup with aioli to taramasalata, mains range from straightforward fish and chips to panfried seabass and fantail crevette linguini with chilli and ginger and baby spinach. If you can manage it, the blackberry and apple crumble with clotted cream is fab. Effective cocktails and nice wines - more than a dozen are available by the glass.
